Description
Introduction Described separately in the late 19th century by George Caldwell and Henri Luc, (1) the Caldwell-Luc (CL) operation was the mainstay of surgical treatment for maxillary sinus disease before the advent of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), also known as mucosa-preserving surgery. With the rise of FESS in the 1980s, the CL procedure came to be reserved for patients with recalcitrant maxillary sinusitis in whom aggressive medical and surgical management had failed.
